Lyrics of East of Eden

We found it extremely difficult when it came to analysing the song lyrics, we found It could mean many different things, therefore being open to many different storylines that we could use for our video. First we found that there is a biblical reference to the title of the songs of ‘sin and innocence’. There is also a book by John Steinbeck named East of Eden and a film named the same starring James Dean . The meaning of the song changes weather you link it to any of these points.

The chorus links to trying to escape and conforming to the rules of society. They show her wanting to escape her trapped world and escape the conventions and rules of society.
In the song we feel that she wants to find Eden; her Paradise.
The repetition through out the song can be used to show desperation to find freedom. There are also sexual links throughout the song, for example, "unbuttoned down the middle". The chorus also lines to Steinbeck's book with this quotation from it "the free, roaming mind being perused, roped blunted, drugged."

However the Land of Nod can also be referred to the mythical land of sleep “Go off to the land of Nod” plays with the phases “nod off” if we then link this back to not wanting to be confined to society the song could mean that the only way out of the control is to sleep, which could be seen as to suicide. The East of Eden could be seen as reaching Heaven after killing yourself.
