Why we chose our artists name.. LUNA LUX

Why we chose our artist name?

We wanted her name to stand out and be easy to say, which also makes it easy to remember. We researched names which would link t her boho/indie style. Firstly we came up with the name Luna. For having this idea we could link it to the Greek Goddess Luna, who was a embodiment of the moon. There are also other nature aspects to her name as well, as there are different islands and trees that are called Luna which will link with her star image that we are trying to create. This is an image of a Luna Moth.

After we came up with this name we thought that it needed a second name. To keep up with the light theme we chose the name Lux. After researching we found that Lux is a unit of illuminance, but also Lux is a Greek word for light, which will help create more of her star image. This lead us to name our artist…… Luna Lux.

Initial Shot Ideas

Research into Props

This is our first type of research on the main props that we will use in our video.  The three main props are animal masks, powder paint and teacups. These all symbols that will represent the main theme of the music video, which is not wanting to conform to society.  This is a message that we want to be very clear so we need to make sure that all of our mise-en-scene always links back to this theme. Props are very important to think about because, it will add to what the artist is about. For example the tea cups will be vintage to help give more of a star image for her.

Research Into Hair

When researching hair and makeup for this genre we found the style was very effortless and looked undone but put together at the same time. We found that nothing was sleek or polished. The style was very 'lived in' with curls/waves and lots of braids. When hair is down, it had texture and never looked flat. If the hair was up, they normally had braids incorporated and also had a few hair accessories like flower crowns and headbands, these are also a factor we would like to include in our video.

These are a few pictures of how we would like the hair for our artist:

Creating Star Image

From thinking up what are artist is going to be like, it will be easier for us to develop her more with what she looks like and how she will act, throughout the music video. This will hopefully make marketing easier because, we know how we can market her to her target audience, for example she is a nature lover which means that she will be more appealing to hippies and such. From her style this links into with her personality because she is very relaxed her style is effortless. This means that when we plan with what she is wearing it needs to all be linked back with what she is like as a person and what her general style is. Her inspirations were very important because, it shows where she has come from and what show wants to develop like. This is something that should be thought of overtime as the artist develops and matures.

Zella Day Lip Sync

This is the lip sync with the person that we would like to be our artist. This is because we think that she really suits the role of the star that we created. We decided to practice the song with her, to see what we need to work on with her before we started to film, to make sure that she didn't mess up on the day. This will help to make sure that the video will flow well and it looks like she actually is singing it.

From practising this I saw that we need to practice her pronouncing the words to make it look believable. Also I saw that she needed to learn the lyrics of the song more to make sure that it looks fluid. Also she smirks too much which is something that we want to avoid in the video as it wouldn't suit the tar image, she will have to be more serious. Lastly I think that her mouth needs to be more relaxed when she sings because, at the moment it looks very stiff and uncomfortable which something that the artist shouldn't look like is.

Film Ideas

In this video we show us creating a mind map of ideas for the music video. We discussed as a group while filming this. We came up with idea such as: having a nature like theme, the use of zooming, the use of time lapsing and including concept within our video to link into to deeper meanings of 'East of Eden'.

Audience Reactions to Lyrics

We went round to our target audience and asked them when reading the lyrics what do they think it means. Most of them replied with the answer of a person trying to run away and doesn’t want to conform to society. This means that when creating the music video this message needs to be very obvious, so the audience can understand the video better.

Lyrics of East of Eden

We found it extremely difficult when it came to analysing the song lyrics, we found It could mean many different things, therefore being open to many different storylines that we could use for our video. First we found that there is a biblical reference to the title of the songs of ‘sin and innocence’. There is also a book by John Steinbeck named East of Eden and a film named the same starring James Dean . The meaning of the song changes weather you link it to any of these points.

The chorus links to trying to escape and conforming to the rules of society. They show her wanting to escape her trapped world and escape the conventions and rules of society.
In the song we feel that she wants to find Eden; her Paradise.
The repetition through out the song can be used to show desperation to find freedom. There are also sexual links throughout the song, for example, "unbuttoned down the middle". The chorus also lines to Steinbeck's book with this quotation from it "the free, roaming mind being perused, roped blunted, drugged."

However the Land of Nod can also be referred to the mythical land of sleep “Go off to the land of Nod” plays with the phases “nod off” if we then link this back to not wanting to be confined to society the song could mean that the only way out of the control is to sleep, which could be seen as to suicide. The East of Eden could be seen as reaching Heaven after killing yourself.

Final Song Pitch

This is the final pitch for our music video song. Our final choice was Zella Day. We changed the song from our first pitch of songs due to the change of groups and researching further into the genre of songs we found this would be the best for our group. The genre of this song is Pop but we feel as a group it will be a good idea to put a twist on this turning it into Indie Pop. We think this would work more due the feedback we had on the song and how the artist sounds. We find that her voice has a unique touch to it making it sound less pop than other artists. We chose this song mainly due to the catchy beat, the artists vocals and the lyrics of the song. The lyrics are about 'The East Of Eden' and we feel as thought we could really play with the lyrics of the song and the genre, creating individuality compared to the other artists within the genre.

The audience reaction to our song was really insightful as it showed us who the target audience would be. For example when we got the audiences to listen to the song the girls reacted more than the boys did. This shows us without even asking a question that our target audience would be girls in their late teens. All the girls were really positive with the beat of the song which is something that we should incorporate with our editing as this seems to be a big impacted to our audience. From asking the question who is the song aimed at? They all agreed on the same age group of people which is late teens, which makes our target audience definite, this will lead to us when creating aspects of our video or digipak then we defiantly know who to aim it at.  However the genre of the song was a little bit more difficult, as it wasn't totally obvious to everyone as they came up with different ideas of what it was. Pop did come up which was what the genre actually was, but the audience wasn't too sure which means when we plan for our video we need to consider ways in which we can make the genre of the song more obvious as the song doesn't automatically show what the song is. From asking the question "What would you expect to see in the music video?" this was helpful as we could see what the audiences could imagine when listening to the song. We were given examples that we did think would be a good idea, for example one said about having dry paint, we really liked having this idea as we thought of ways in which we could link it to different narratives that we have already thought about. Imagining the artist was helpful as well because, they all came up with the same idea of what she should look like. For example they saw her with dark long hair, very mellow and wearing clothes that not everyone would wear. This is something that we need to keep coming back to as this was mostly our target audience, which means that any of our ideas need to be kept linking back to them, for us to be able to create a video that will attract the target audience so that the artist can sell their music successfully.

Audience Reactions

This is the video for our audience reactions when we played them our song. We asked them the following questions.
What do you think the following genre is?
What do you expect to see in the music video?
How do you imagine the artist?
Who do you think the target audience is?

From this we found out the things that our target audience would like to see within our artist and our final music video. I think that gaining more responses will help us to find more idea for our music video and help us to identity our target audience correctly.
